Ultar Sar – The Sky-Defying Jewel of Hunza
Hidden among the sacred spires of the Karakoram lies Ultar Sar, a magnificent peak soaring 7,388 meters (24,239 feet) into the skies above Hunza Valley, in the heart of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Also known as Ultar II, this mountain is not just a towering mass of rock and ice—it is a symbol of mystery, adventure, and the raw, untamed spirit of the high Himalayas.
Geographical Significance
Ultar Sar is one of the most dramatic peaks in the Hunza region, standing just northeast of the famed Karimabad village. Part of the Ultar massif, it lies close to other iconic peaks such as Ladyfinger Peak (Bublimotin) and Bojahagur Duanasir II, forming a striking skyline that leaves travelers breathless.
Despite not being the tallest mountain in Pakistan, Ultar Sar holds the distinction of being one of the steepest and most difficult climbs in the world, with its base rising sharply from the valley floor, providing an imposing vertical relief of nearly 5,300 meters.
A Mountaineer’s Dream – And Nightmare
The mountain has earned a legendary status among climbers for its sheer difficulty and the unpredictable weather that swirls around its summit. The first successful ascent was not recorded until 1996 by a Japanese expedition, after numerous failed and tragic attempts.
Even today, climbing Ultar Sar remains one of the most technical and dangerous expeditions in the Karakoram range, reserved for only the most experienced mountaineers.
Ultar Glacier and the Sacred Streams
Below the mountain lies the hauntingly beautiful Ultar Glacier, feeding icy waters into the Hunza River. The glacier itself is a marvel—creaking with ancient ice and hidden crevasses, bordered by high cliffs and alpine meadows. Trekking along its base offers a surreal view of Ultar Sar and the entire Ultar Valley, making it a favorite for photographers and adventure seekers.
Cultural Echoes of the Mountain
In local folklore, Ultar Sar is believed to be the abode of ancient spirits. The Wakhi and Burusho people living nearby revere the mountain, often referring to it in traditional songs and poetry. It is said that Ladyfinger Peak, the sharp needle-like neighbor of Ultar, is a mythical princess turned to stone—gazing eternally at her lost love, Ultar Sar.
Trekking and Adventure Tourism
For those not aiming for the summit, Ultar Sar still offers incredible trekking opportunities. The Ultar Meadow Trek is a challenging yet rewarding hike that begins from Karimabad and ascends through walnut groves, glacial streams, and rocky terrain, eventually opening up to a stunning viewpoint of the peak.
Nearby attractions include:
→Baltit Fort – A 700-year-old heritage site.
→Altit Fort – A beautifully preserved cultural landmark.
→Eagle’s Nest Viewpoint – Ideal for sunrise views over Ultar Sar.
→Attabad Lake – A turquoise marvel just a short drive away.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal months to explore Ultar Sar’s base and nearby treks are May to September, when the weather is relatively stable, the meadows are in bloom, and the skies clear enough to witness the full glory of the mountain range.
Photography and Stargazing
At night, the mountain becomes a stargazer’s paradise. The skies above Ultar Sar are some of the clearest in the world. Long-exposure photography reveals an ocean of stars swirling above the snow-capped peak—an experience few places on Earth can rival.
Why Ultar Sar Should Be on Your Bucket List
Whether you’re an adventurer, a seeker of silence, a photographer, or a lover of wild legends, Ultar Sar offers a journey into one of the last untouched realms of Earth. It is a place where the mountains speak, the wind tells stories, and every sunrise feels like a sacred miracle.
Ultar Sar isn’t just a destination. It’s an invitation to the unknown—a towering echo of Earth’s primal beauty calling to those who dare to dream beyond the horizon.
