Cholistan Camel Safri Tour

Overview

Cholistan Camel Safari also includes some interesting sightseeing tours in Lahore, visits to majestic shrines around Multan, exploring ancient sites at Harappa, and sightseeing tours of Karachi and Islamabad.

The Cholistan is well known for its camel safaris. The Winter season is the perfect time to explore Cholistan. This tour is an outstanding combination of adventure and culture that allows you to visit not only some of Pakistan’s most important historic cities but also the remote villages and Cholistan Desert travelers camps on Camel’s back. This desert covers an area of more than 2,000 square kilometers and extends into India’s the Thar Desert.

During this trip, we will explore Bahawalpur’s vibrant bazaars and visit its fascinating Museum before leaving for the desert driving through Lal Suhanra Park, a beautiful nature reserve established in 1972. We will arrive at the village of Channan Pir, in the Cholistan Desert from where your thrilling Camel Safari begins. Channan Pir is the holy village famous for the annual URS (death anniversary) during springtime when thousands flock for the pilgrimage to the holy man’s grave at this place. After exploring this village meet your Camels and the Camel men.

You’ll experience the life of the nomads for the next three days as you ride back from camp to camp on Camel, visiting various villages and nomad camps to familiarize yourself with the Cholistani people’s fascinating lifestyle. Nights will be spent in tents under open desert skies perfect for star gazing and local music and dances can follow dinners. The highlight of this safari is the formidable Derawar fort built in the 9th century, where you sleep in the desert after having said goodbye to your camels for your last night. Visit Derawar Mosque, which is over 100 years old, and the Royal Graveyard with its beautifully carved graves. Locally known as ”Rohi,”  the Cholistan Desert, situated about 30 km from Bahawalpur, is a large stretch of barren land that covers an area of 26,300 km2 bordering Sindh’s the Thar Desert. The term the Cholistan is derived from the Turkish word ”Cho” which literally means desert where people live a semi-nomadic life in search of food and water for themselves and animals, moving from place to place with their livestock. The lifestyle of Cholistan people is very fascinating. Cholistan’s culturally rich and self-subsistent people are very good at arts and crafts, including textiles, camel goods, leatherwork, and jewelry, isolated from the outside influence.

The Cholistan Desert is the Indian subcontinent’s largest desert, occupying more than 25,000 square kilometers. It stretches south into Sindh’s the Thar Desert, and east into the Rajasthan Desert of India. It is said that its name derives from the Urdu word Cholna–walking–although it is not clear if this refers to the moving sand dunes or the semi-nomadic people who wander the desert in search of water and pastures. The Hakra River once flowed through the region, supporting a modern civilization with Meonjodaro and Harappa. Around 400 archeological sites have been open along the dried-up bed of the Hakra, in addition to an indication of many Stone Age settlements at the lower levels. A sequence of desert forts has been built to guard the trade route across Cholistan, the best conserved of which is Derawar Fort. This unique trip takes you to Bahawalpur – Yazman and Chanan Pir while we on a camel ride, we spend 2-4 nights camping en-route visiting nomad settlements, and witness camel rider dance, the local jhumar around a warm campfire.
